The Wait Project:
HIV and AIDS Education through Music, Poetry, and Arts

“The WAIT Project” is a musical textbook on CD consisting of 19 songs designed to create awareness and education on HIV/AIDS. The goal of the WAIT Project is to increase factual knowledge about HIV/AIDS and help participants understand what it is and what it is like to live with the disease. This project aims to equip people with tools on how to avoid infection and increase advocacy development amongst the youth population. It also addresses the comprehensive needs of people in search and in need of a HIV/AIDS Prevention Educational tool. The Project equips participants with the facts of how it is transmitted and some of the factors that contribute to the spread of HIV. The WAIT Project helps remove the stigma for those infected by educating the population through the use of music, drama, and poetry.

Initially, from the earliest beginnings of human history, information has been communicated and distributed through the medium of the music media. Many of our young people get their style of dress, manner of speech, and in many instances their guide to acceptable conduct and behavior through music. The WAIT Project is the same message of prevention but in a new method of delivery that has proven to be effective.

Since music crosses all racial, political, religious, and economical barriers, we use it to convey information about sex, drugs, alcohol, and other relevant issues that place people at a high risk for contracting HIV/AIDS in society. The CD creates awareness in a unique non-judgmental way that is enlightening, educating, and entertaining.

This project focuses on:

  • Reducing the level of infection by using a different method of prevention education.

  • Reducing the level of infection and increases awareness by motivating people to get tested.

  • Reducing the level of new infection by motivating PLWAs to practice low risk behaviors.

  • Presenting abstinence as a choice because it’s the only 100% prevention method.

  • Motivating people to behavior modification that leads to social change by stressing choices, decisions, consequences, and responsibilities.

The Wait Project's Vision

Ole Pete Key Incorporated believes if every High School Student receives a copy of “The Wait Project”, HIV/AIDS cases will decrease tremendously over the next ten years. Studies have attested to the fact that music has the capability to increase the brain’s ability to retain information. Experts say we learn more rapidly through rhymes and rhythms, just as we learned our ABC’s and Nursery Rhymes as children. Today’s electronic media (television, music, movies, and the internet) has a very powerful influence on our youth. Whether we realize it or not the media’s power to influence and inform can be negative or positive. We believe “The Wait Project” has the potential to influence our youth in a positive way.

By traveling into the world of our youth through this musical vehicle and meeting them where they are, our goal is to prevent more people from dying of this deadly virus. Ole Pete Key Inc. would like to see millions of people giving testimonies of how they were not infected because of listening to the CD and waiting. Facts are important but if they are not communicated effectively, they will not be heard. It is not that the youth is not listening but we must speak in a language that will cause them to listen and live. Because the number of HIV/AIDS’ cases are increasing among teenagers rapidly.

“If the lock that is holding people captive to becoming infected with HIV/AIDS is ignorance, then the key is in education and awareness.”

Ole Pete Key Inc.’s vision for “The Wait Project” is to distribute the CD to every High School Students along with, or in lieu of the brochures that educates about HIV/AIDS. We would also like to distribute the CD to the public in stores to reach our goal of educating everyone about the virus. We welcome the opportunity to go into schools, and the community to educate and create awareness through live performances and Health seminars.
